Day 6 & 7 — Saturday & Sunday June 23 & 24, 2007
Hello everyone!
We’ve had a very busy Saturday evening and a fairly restful Sunday afternoon here in Namibia. Last evening (Saturday), we were in charge of planning the children’s Fun Night. We started off with a couple of group games. The first one was Team Charades where we divided the children up into 5 teams. Each team had to act out a Bible verse or story and the other children had to guess. The winners won glow bracelets. (They were a big hit!) The second game was Hot Potato, or rather Hot Orange (We couldn’t find any potatoes, so we had to improvise.) Glow bracelets were eventually won by all!
After the games, the Children of Zion Band made their debut performance (Kariferi on keyboard, Disco on lead guitar, Samuel on bass guitar, and Mwiya on drums.) Joe (Matheus) did a little coaching to get them going, but once they got "into the groove", they were quite good! They were only supposed to play one song, but continued on with four songs by popular demand! We all learned some new dance steps from the children. It was really fun!
Then we finished the evening with Papa Gary playing some "oldies, but goodies". Rev. Dennis can do a mean twist!!
This morning (Sunday) we participated in the children’s worship service. Joe led praise songs and played guitar and then we did the message. With help from the children, we acted out the Parable of the Sower (think Godspell!) and then Dennis summarized the message ~ in a very entertaining way!
On Sundays, the staff looks after the children so the volunteers can have some free time. So Gary Mink took us on the maiden voyage of their new boat. We traveled east on the Zambezi River for awhile and then headed back on the other side of "Hippo Island", which is directly across the river from the children’s home. We saw a couple of monkeys, and then we stopped for a moment on the bank to take a quick walk on "Hippo Island". We saw lots of monkey tracks and Gary pointed out where the hippos slide down the bank to the water, but no sign of any hippos until …!
We were just about to give up when Gary made one last run up the river to check out one more possible spot and there they were! Unbelievable! Three large hippos AND a crocodile checking them out on a bank that was maybe 20 to 30 feet from us. We’ve got some great pictures to share! The hippos cooperated and posed just for a few moments, but then they dove into the water. So Gary needed to move out quickly since the hippos do have the potential of butting into our boat if they want to! But we got a safe distance away in no time!
As Dennis mentioned in the last e-mail, Deb Taylor drove with Rebecca Mink and Becca (the other volunteer who came with us) to Windhoek (Namibia’s capital) to take Beerina to the hospital there to have her ankle treated. The trip is about 13 to 14 hours one way. The latest word from them is that Beerina has a torn ligament and has been put in a cast, so the group should be traveling back soon. Please pray for safe traveling mercies!!
So that’s all for the moment. Ed (Koch) made a fabulous meatloaf and Jeff Taylor made mashed potatoes for dinner for the volunteers, so we’re looking forward to that.
On Monday, several team members will go back to Mafuta to work with the preschool children and work the feeding station there, so we’ll send news of their experiences soon as well as an update on the men’s building project.
So thanks for all of your prayers! Please keep them coming!
To be continued . . . .
Blessings! ~ Clydia on behalf of Team One
